Weekend Update

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

It’s been a rough couple of weeks where writing is concerned. But I’m happy to report I’ve *finally* had a breakthrough, and that the new Markhat novel is off to a great start. I think this is going to be the best one yet. It already has a pace and a level of action that I’m really pleased with, and I’m glad I decided to take the plunge and introduce a major new element into the series. What element, you ask?

Hah. As if. Only my editor will know…

I’ve also gotten a rash of emails from people who want a new Wistril and Kern tale. Right now, Wistril Compleat is ranked at #76 in humor books for the Kindle, at #82 under the comic heading (comic as in comedy, I suppose, there’s not a single picture in Wistril Compleat ), and at #88 under children’s books in the science fiction, fantasy, and mystery heading.

Which is quite a surprise. Not that Wistril Compleat isn’t good, because it is, but it’s showing a dogged longevity I didn’t expect. Wistril Compleat has been out there for about a year now, and Kindle sales just keep climbing.

Part of the reason might be the 99 cent price. I’ve been tempted to bump it up, but that doesn’t seem like a good way to reward the fans of the characters so I’ll just leave it where it is. So, to anyone out there who’s asked for more Wistril , you have been heard, and more is on the way, I promise!

I’ve even got the story started. Just for reading this blog, you get a sneak peek – it’s going to be called “Wistril Ascendant,” and it concerns Wistril’s determined (and dangerous) attempt to prove powered flight is possible without using any magic whatsoever.

Yes, a wizard taking to the skies without a single spell. It’s going to be a very short flight – but as Wistril is aware, it’s the landing or lack thereof that matters.

In other news, the PC on which I write is showing some signs of age. So I’ve embarked on a perilous journey myself, in that my next PC won’t be delivered whole and ready to run in a box. Instead, the new PC is slowly taking shape downstairs, piece by piece. When I have the final component, I’ll take a weekend and build the whole thing myself, from scratch.

So far I have the case and the power supply. The case is a plain, roomy Cooler Master Centurion 5 mid-tower. The power supply is a massive honking Cooler Master GX 750, which is capable of supplying 60 amps (enough to cold crank a truck) with a mean-time-between-failures rating of eleven years, yes years.

Yeah, I’m building it to last.

Any techheads out there will recognize the name Tiger Direct. That’s where I’m getting my parts. They’ve been most cool helping me shop.

That’s it for now. Time to get to work. Till next time, stay groovy, people!
